Sugar exports may reach 1.5 million tonnes by end of December: ISMA

The total sugar exports for this season, which began in October, is expected to touch 1.5 million tonnes by the end of December.

According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association, market reports suggest that contracts have been signed for the export of 45 lakh to 50 lakh tonnes of sugar. Of this, six lakh tonnes have been dispatched and another nine lakh tonnes are expected to be dispatched by the end of December. The total sugar export for the last season (October 2021 to September 2022) was 111 lakh tonnes.

The association said that till December 15 this year, sugar production was 82 lakh tonnes, which is about four lakh tonnes more than the same period last year. All major sugar producing states are witnessing high production so far this season. The total number of sugar mills in operation is 497 as against 479 in the previous sugar season.
