The Delhi Police on Saturday arrested 25-year-old web designer Omkareshwar Thakur for allegedly being a developer from Indore in Madhya Pradesh. Police said that during his initial interrogation, Thakur admitted that he was a member of a traditional group (TradeMahasabha) on Twitter and shared a view on it to “defame and troll Muslim women”.

DCP (Special Cell Cyber ​​Unit) KPS Malhotra said, “He had developed the code for the application on GitHub and access to the same was with all the members of the group.”

The official further said that Thakur had shared the application on his Twitter account and photographs of Muslim women were uploaded by the group members.

“He had joined a group called TradeMahasabha on Twitter in January 2020 using the Twitter handle @gangescion. During various group discussions, the members discussed about trolling of Muslim women,” said Mr. Malhotra.

After the social media uproar over the “Sully Deals” application, “he had removed all his social media footprint”. Officials said that further inquiries are on while technical equipment including laptop and phone of the accused is being analyzed to recover the code and images related to the application.

Police said that in July last year, Bishnoi and Thakur came in contact when a member of the group, who was related to the former, shared details of the “Sully Deals” application. “This was the first time that Neeraj Bishnoi or other members of the group had heard about the application on GitHub,” the police alleged.

Twitter handles were traced and police found that accounts and other online footprints were deleted from various social media platforms. Bishnoi reportedly confessed that the Twitter handle belonged to a person from Indore.

The DCP said, “Based on backtrack analysis and archive data, a Twitter handle by the name of Omkar Thakur was identified…” Police said Thakur has allegedly confessed to creating the “Sully Deal” application.

“The necessary digital footprints are being checked in their laptops and cyberspace,” the official said.

“Some police officers came to my house when I was on a work-related tour… My son told me over the phone that he was being taken to Delhi for questioning. I just asked him if he had done anything wrong and He said he didn’t do it… I have faith in him,” said Mr. Thakur. “He was an IT expert and a successful web designer, he couldn’t be involved in developing an application like this.”
