Sunak movie review: A cliched action film, but Vidyut Jammwal has his moments

mad

Cast: Vidyut Jammwal, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Rukmini Maitra, Neha Dhupia

Director: Kanishk Verma

If your idea is to have a good time in movies, with Vidyut Jammwal flexing his muscles and breaking bones, then, you are in for a blessed treat at the movies this week. For the rest, I feel, it is better to enjoy a long weekend on a web series. The craze is full of action, but completely devoid of perspective.

Vivaan (Vidyut Jamwal) is treating his ailing wife Anshika (Rukmini Maitra) at a hospital, who is recovering from a life-threatening surgery. The hospital becomes the target of some terrorists, led by Saju Solanki (Chandan Roy Sanyal), who plan to rescue a fellow criminal Ajay Pal Singh (Kiran Karmarkar) from the premises.

A hostage drama set against the backdrop of a hospital, the plot was truly unique and had full potential to keep the audience hooked. But it’s shoddy screenplay, wafer-thin plot, and poor writing craze make another cliché action movie.

The hospital setting allows action director Andy Long Nguyen with Electricity to come up with some unique action sequences that involve an MRI machine and a Swiss ball. The 117-minute film has only one song, which works in favor of the makers. The action sequences are the biggest USP of the film. They are completely convincing and one can digest the fact that one man can kill so many bad guys.

It is difficult for the characters to root, even if the actors have given a decent performance. Vidyut’s back flip might make you happy and his stunts have gotten better over the years, but that’s about it. He tries his best to bring out the anger of a passionate lover, but clearly he romances more than Rukmini Maitra, the Bengali actor who is making her Hindi debut and is honest in the film.

As always, Vidyut is in excellent form, doing full justice to the task at hand. As a terrorist, Chandan is dangerous and does a good job. Neha Dhupia, who plays the police officer in charge of the situation, hardly gets to do anything.

It’s not a terrible film by any means, but the action, which attempts to find support in a single thread story, isn’t that interesting. The craze blooms only in fights, but by the time the clock ticks towards the climax, you are tired. How much can you hoot for a broken neck and bruised bones? You can try to find thrill in Vidyut’s kick but there is nothing else in the film.
