Sunrisers Hyderabad all-rounder Washington Sundar ruled out of IPL 2023 with hamstring injury

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) suffered a major blow with all-rounder Washington Sundar ruled out of the rest of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 due to a hamstring injury. Sundar picked up his first wickets of the season in the last match against Delhi Capitals in Hyderabad – three of them coming in a single over.

SRH took to Twitter to announce their boycott. “Washington Sundar has been ruled out of IPL 2023 due to a hamstring injury. Speedy recovery, Vashi” it posted.

Sundar had an impressive performance with both the ball and the bat in their previous match against DC. The off-spinner claimed 3/28 and then scored a 15-ball 24 although SRH lost the match.

The all-rounder has struggled with injuries in recent years. Sundar missed the most in 2022 season Due to injuries as well as due to COVID-19 infection.

His long string of injuries began back in July 2021 when he fractured his finger while batting for Combined Counties against the Indian team in a warm-up game. He played for the county team so that India could test all its players before the start of the series.

That injury caused him to miss the entire home season and then ahead of the white-ball series in South Africa in January 2022 as he was suffering from a COVID-19 infection. In February-March last year, he missed the two white-ball home series against West Indies and Sri Lanka due to a hamstring injury.

During IPL 2022 in April-May, he split his ligament and missed five matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad. After a long rehabilitation, the BCCI was instrumental in getting him a county contract with Lancashire last year.

Sundar has played 58 IPL matches so far and has scored 378 runs and also taken 36 wickets. SRH have not announced whether they will look for a replacement for Sundar for the rest of the season. He played nine matches in IPL 2022 and scored 101 runs at 14.42 and took six wickets at 39.83.

His absence now means Mayank Markande is the only specialist spinner in the SRH squad apart from England’s Adil Rashid. However, Rashid’s inclusion would mean leaving one of their three overseas recruits – captain Aiden Markram, Harry Brook and Heinrich Klaasen – out of the batting or leaving pacer Marco Jansen out of the lineup.

Kavya Maran-owned SRH’s next match is again against Delhi Capitals, but this time away from home, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Saturday.
