Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said on Friday that violating the ban on single-use plastic (SUP) items in Delhi can attract a fine of up to ₹1 lakh or a jail term of up to five years.

The minister said the Delhi government would issue warning notices to units violating the ban on 19 identified SUP items by July 10 and penal action would be taken against repeat violators after that.

However, the government will give top priority to creating awareness against the use of SUP items and providing people with their alternatives, he said.

“Teams from Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), Revenue Department and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will conduct inspections and issue warning notices against those who do not follow the ban by July 10,” said Mr Rai while launching the three-day campaign. . “After July 10, punitive action will be taken against the guilty. Violation of the ban will be punishable with a fine of up to one lakh rupees or imprisonment up to 5 years or both under the Environment Protection Act, 1986,” he said.

“Many are of the view that the ban will be successful by forming teams of DPCC, Revenue Department and MCD, imposing fines and shutting down (defaulting) units. Our government thinks differently. Our aim is to enforce the ban. The first is to provide options to the people,” the minister said.
