Supporting joint operations, IAF is not just an auxiliary branch, says new Air Chief Chaudhry

New Delhi: The new Indian Air Force chief, Air Chief Marshal VR Choudhary, on Tuesday strongly lobbied for joint planning and operations between the three services, but made it clear that theater structures and procedures should take into account the military’s individual strengths and principles. Choudhary also clarified that the IAF is not just an auxiliary branch, and even the Army will have to support the Air Force in its operations.

“We are fully committed to integration and connectedness. There is no doubt about it,” Air Chief Marshal Choudhary said while addressing the Air Force Chief’s annual press conference ahead of Air Force Day on October 8.

He was responding to questions on the ongoing discussions in the defense establishment on the structure of theater commands, divisions, during a meeting chaired by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. in june.

ACM Choudhary said the points raised by his predecessor ACM RKS Bhadauria (Retd) focused on the need for structures and procedures to meet future warfare.

“This is the key element of restructuring in theatres. The strength of each service has to be taken into account and needs to be synchronized for the pure combat capability of the nation,” he said.

The IAF chief also underlined that the principles of each service should also be taken into account while designing the structures, and said the concerns of their force have been considered and deliberations and discussions are on.

“We are hopeful that the final framework that emerges will carry out joint planning and joint operations in the future,” he said.

No service can go into conflict without the other two

Asked about Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat’s recent remarks that the Indian Air Force is a “support arm”, ACM Choudhary said that in any conflict in the world, the Air Force has multiple roles.

He said the roles varied from offensive strikes and air transport to supporting military and maritime forces.

“There are various roles for the Air Force and the same holds true for the Indian Air Force. Our training and equipment capability fulfill multiple roles,” he said.

Chowdhury underlined that no single service can go into a fight alone, and it “will need the support of the other two services. This is true for all services. It is not that the IAF is the only support arm, The army also has to support the IAF in its air operations at times.

The IAF chief also said that his force is fully prepared to deal with any security challenge in eastern Ladakh, and added that India’s combat capability will not be affected by the new infrastructure created by the Chinese side in the region.

He said China’s ability to launch multiple high-altitude missions would remain weak.

ACM Chowdhary said that the Chinese Air Force is still present at three airports along the Line of Actual Control.

He said India is fully prepared to deal with a “two-front” war scenario involving China and Pakistan. He said the only concern is western technology which is going from Pakistan to China.
