A suspected hunter was injured in police firing while trying to escape from police custody in Assam’s Biswanath district.

The injured suspected hunter has been identified as Dilwar Hussain. Police on Saturday arrested him from Jonai in Dhemaji district for his alleged involvement in a rhino poaching incident in Kaziranga National Park.

A police officer said that when Hussain directed the police to find his accomplices, who were also involved in poaching, he tried to escape from police custody.

“The police team first warned him to stop, but he did not respond. After this, he opened fire in his leg. Later, he was admitted to a hospital,” said the police officer.
