TACT seeks reopening of two micro units shut down by Coimbatore Corporation

The Coimbatore Corporation had recently sealed a micro unit and asked another unit located in Saudambiga Nagar (ward 34) to stop production.

Following this, members of the Tamil Nadu Association of Cottage and Micro Enterprises (TACT) on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to the district administration and the corporation demanding reopening of the two units.

Association president J. James said a resident who lived near the unit had reportedly complained of noise and air pollution. This matter came to light six months back. The representatives of the association held discussions with the officials and urged them to ascertain the facts about the level of pollution. “However, without any such measures, one unit was sealed and the other was asked to stop production by the authorities on May 21,” he alleged. The units were operating in the same area for many years and had industrial electricity connection.

He said that the units operate CNC machines and lathes and there is no possibility of air or noise pollution from these.

There are thousands of micro units in Coimbatore and many of them are located in residential areas. One of the long pending demands of the units is separate industrial assets for micro units. But, this demand has not been fulfilled. The operations of micro units would be affected if action was taken on the units only on the basis of complaints and without proper assessment of the ground reality, Mr James said.

Corporation sources said action was taken against the two units as they were running out of homes and the unit owners had assured officials that they would stop production and move to the new premises.
