Kabul: The Taliban leadership has launched a major campaign to try and eliminate the ISIS-Khorasan presence following a bomb attack near a mosque in Kabul last week. Taliban forces claim to have destroyed an Islamic State cell north of Kabul and have launched a search to destroy any ISIS-K footprint or presence in the capital and other parts of the country.
ISIS-K has emerged as a major challenger to the Taliban as the group has claimed several deadly attacks in the past, most recently at the Kabul airport, during the withdrawal of foreign troops, followed by Eid outside last week. There was a suicide bombing. Gah Mosque, where prayers were being offered for the dead mother of Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid.
But the emergence of ISIS-K and Daesh operatives from the capital creates formidable challenges that the Taliban government faces as a major resistance to its Islamic rule in the country.
The Taliban claim they conducted a decisive raid and nabbed a trio of terrorists behind the mosque attack, eliminating the ISIS-K cell.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said, “A special unit conducted an operation against ISIS insurgents. As a result of the operation, which was very decisive and successful, the ISIS center was completely destroyed and all ISIS members were killed.”
According to reports, ISIS-K has opposed the Taliban leadership and the establishment of a new government in Afghanistan, calling it against the teachings and requirements of the Sharia regime of law.
It is still unclear whether more such ISIS-K managed cells or the Taliban have rounded up militants, but there have been reports of heavy clashes from various parts of the areas around the capital, Kabul.
The Taliban government has said that ISIS-K has no organized presence in Afghanistan, nor does al-Qaeda have any presence in the country. However, the ongoing targeted attacks have certainly raised concerns about the authenticity behind the Taliban’s claims.
The ISIS-K challenge has also become a major obstacle for the Taliban in claiming they have had a justified success in Afghanistan, which has brought peace back to the country.
Analysts say ISIS-K will remain as the Taliban’s top rival group for several days and months to come. It was also reported that ISIS-K is recruiting new fighters into its group to increase its strength and manpower to fight against the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan.
