Tamil Nadu college dean removed after students take controversial oath

The dean claimed that the students themselves took the oath.

Madurai, Tamil Nadu:

The dean of the Government Medical College in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai has been transferred and placed on “compulsory wait” for allowing first-year students to take the controversial oath in Sanskrit instead of the traditional Hippocratic oath. State health officials said the medical students had taken the English translation of the Sanskrit oath “Charak Oath” during their induction ceremony on Saturday. The dean claimed that the students themselves took the oath.

Health officials said, “The dean should have been careful on this sensitive issue. He claims that the doctors have decided to do it on their own. Even the medical commission says doctors should take oath in Sanskrit.” will not be forced.”

The Charaka oath is a definite part of the text in the Charaka Samhita, a Sanskrit text on Ayurveda. Observance of the oath, which has many controversial conditions such as practicing penance during student life, is a precondition for being taught in medical science.

One of the instructions is that women should be treated only in the presence of Brahmin/male member of the family.

The Health Minister of Tamil Nadu has ordered the Director of Medical Education in the state to initiate an investigation.

The state government has also issued a circular asking medical colleges and hospitals to use only the age-old Hippocratic Oath.
