Tamil Nadu governor returns bill against NEET

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi has returned a bill seeking to do away with NEET-based admission for undergraduate medical degree courses to the Speaker of the Assembly, the Raj Bhavan said on Thursday.

The bill, adopted by the Assembly in September, sought to admit students to UG medical degree programs on the basis of plus two scores. After a detailed study of the Bill exempting the State from NEET and the report of the High Level Committee constituted by the State Government in this regard, the Governor was of the opinion that the Bill was against the interest of the students. Especially for rural and economically poor students of the state,” said a one-page press release from Raj Bhavan.

Therefore, the Governor has returned the Bill to the Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on February 1, 2022, “for reconsideration by the House, giving detailed reasons”. The release said that the Supreme Court Christian Medical College, Vellore Association Vs. Union of India (2020) The Board has extensively examined the issue especially from the point of view of social justice and has upheld NEET as it prevents economic exploitation of poor students and advances social justice.

Within hours of Raj Bhavan’s release, the Tamil Nadu government said it would take steps to re-adopt the same bill in the assembly. The government also called an all-party meeting at the Secretariat on Friday to discuss the steps to be taken in this regard.
