Tamil Nadu one-day bandh: Authorities take steps to prevent violations

Restaurants were allowed to offer only takeaway services (7 am to 10 pm) and food delivery firms were allowed to function.

Police closed/regulated access to several flyovers here and elsewhere and set up checkpoints on highways, major intersections and main roads as part of measures to crack down on violators.

Health Minister Ma Subramaniam along with top civil, health and police officials inspected the enforcement of lockdown norms and sensitized people traveling for essential purposes to follow the guidelines to contain the spread of the virus .

The Greater Chennai Police said on Saturday 381 cases were registered for violation of restrictions and 53 for not maintaining physical distancing.

A release said 761 vehicles were seized in connection with the violation of the COVID containment norms.

In view of the restrictions, the checking of vehicles has been intensified in the districts bordering the neighboring states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and the Union Territory of Puducherry.

To tackle the rising coronavirus cases and the spread of the Omicron strain, Chief Minister MK Stalin a day ago ordered new restrictions, which include a statewide night curfew from 10 pm to 5 am from January 6.

Along with this, he had announced a bandh on 9 January.

The fresh virus cases crossed the 10,000-mark in Tamil Nadu on January 8 as it included 10,978 infections.
