Tamil stunt choreographer arrested for remarks against Periyar

Hindu Munnani activist Kanal Kannan was arrested on Monday for his recent remarks against rationalist leader Periyar EV Ramasamy, following a complaint by a Dravidian organisation, police said.

Hindu Munnani, a prominent organization of the RSS in Tamil Nadu, has called his arrest on Independence Day a murder of democracy. The organization has announced a protest on its Twitter handle against the arrest of Kanal Kannan on 16 August.

Kanal Kannan, secretary of Munnani’s art and culture wing, was arrested from neighboring Puducherry and brought to Chennai. He was produced before a magistrate, who sent him to judicial custody till August 26, a police official said. Stunt choreographer, Kanal Kannan, is a popular personality in the world of Tamil cinema.

A case has been registered against him under sections related to promoting enmity and hatred between people, the police official said.

Recently, Kanal Kannal had allegedly made objectionable remarks at a public meeting organized by Hindu Munnani.

Pointing to an idol in front of the Srirangam Lord Ranganatha Swamy temple, he had said that ‘the day of destruction of the idol which said that there is no God’, would be a day of Hindu awakening.

The idol in context is of Periyar Ramasamy. A clipping of his remarks about him went viral on social media and an office-bearer of the Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhagam filed a complaint urging action against Kannan.

The Cyber ​​Crime Police has registered a case and arrested him after interrogation. A Chennai court rejected Kanal Kannan’s plea for anticipatory bail.
