According to a senior Tata Motors official, the demand for electric cars is surpassing manufacturing activity by a large margin. An average of 5,500-6,000 reservations have been made for the Mumbai-based automaker’s electric vehicle lineup in the last two months, making it the domestic market leader in passenger electric vehicles in the last financial year.
Nexon EV, XPRES-T and Tigor are the three domestically available electric vehicles from the company. It also recently introduced a coupe-style SUV that it aims to release in the next two years. Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Passenger Vehicles and Electric Vehicles, Tata Motors, said in an interview that the company’s EV line had a backlog of customer orders due to the high demand for the vehicle.
“We are seeing that the demand is much higher than the supply. The numbers are only what we have been able to supply, the demand is certainly very strong which is reflected in the number of bookings we have with the EV demand scenario.

The company has got an average of 5,500-6,000 reservations every month in the last one or two months, he said. However, Chandra said Tata Motors was able to produce only around 3,300-3,400 units last month. This means that as per their statement, we have a backlog of orders every month.
Chandra said the company is trying to increase its capacity by increasing sourcing of semiconductors. The company has taken various steps such as sourcing from multiple vendors along with design modifications to increase the availability of the required semiconductors.
“These steps have allowed us to significantly increase production. Just seven months back we were producing just 600 units, but then such actions have allowed us to increase it to the level of 1,500-1,700 and then to the level of 3,000-3500. This will continue,” Chandra said.
When asked about the sales aspirations for this year, Chandra said: “Last year, we grew five times, and so the aspiration will certainly not be in increments but in manifolds.”
According to FADA, Tata Motors led the electric passenger vehicle segment in 2021-22 with a market share of 85.37 per cent in retail and vertical with 15,198 units.
Asked whether electric vehicles could account for 30 per cent of total passenger vehicle sales by 2030, Chandra said: “I believe the demand could be much higher than the 30 per cent level because when If the inflection point is hit, the development is absolutely uncontrolled.”
He added that the main factors limiting growth will be the supply ramp-up and capacity and pace of ecosystem development.
“From a demand perspective, we have seen that it has increased in no time. Despite various ramp-ups, we are still not able to meet the demand. So of course, we are confident that the demand will reach this 30% Will go beyond the percentage mark.” Chandra noted.
