Tata Nexon EV fire: DRDO to lead probe into fire incident

The government has directed the DRDO to lead the investigation into the fire that broke out in the Tata Nexon electric vehicle, which the automaker described as an “isolated thermal incident”. In a video going viral on social media, an electric car of the company was engulfed in flames. Video shows firefighters fighting a fire in a Nexon electric vehicle (EV) in a suburb of Mumbai.

The official said the Defense Research and Development Organisation, a government agency, would lead the investigation. India’s largest manufacturer of electric cars said in a statement, “A detailed investigation is being conducted to ascertain the facts of the isolated thermal phenomenon that has been doing the rounds on social media recently. Will share a detailed response later.” Statement.

The company said it was the first such event to have sold more than 30,000 EVs, most of which are its Nexon models. The incident happened after the e-scooter caught fire, which has triggered an investigation by the Indian government.

Preliminary findings of a federal investigation into three e-scooter makers, including SoftBank-backed Ola Electric, found faulty battery cells and modules to be the leading cause of the fire, Reuters reported last month.

Electrification is the cornerstone of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s agenda for climate change and carbon reduction. EVs are also seen as a way to help India cut its oil import bill and reduce pollution in major cities.

India wants electric models to account for 30% of total passenger car sales in the country by 2030, up from around 1% today, and e-scooters and e-bikes accounting for around 80% of total two-wheeler sales. 2%.
