Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran has been officially appointed as the chairman of Air India, ANI reported on Monday.

Tata Sons chief Chandrasekaran was appointed as the chairman of Air India after a board meeting on Monday (March 14), the report said.

Sources close to the development said former CMD of General Insurance Corporation Alice Gevarghese Vaidyan would also be inducted as an independent director on the board.

N Chandrasekaran was re-appointed as the chairman of Tata Sons – the salt-to-software holding company of the Tata group – in February this year for a second five-year term.

His reappointment was supported by Ratan Tata, chairman of Tata Trusts, which is the majority owner of Tata Sons.

Chandra, as he is commonly referred, took over the reins of Tata Sons in 2017 at a time when the group faced a leadership crisis and trust deficit after his predecessor Cyrus Mistry was ousted by the board . By that time, a trusted Tata lieutenant Chandra had headed TCS, the group’s crown jewel and cash cow.

A large part of Chandra’s tenure was spent fighting legal battles with Mistry.

He joined the board of Tata Sons in October 2016, was named chairman in January 2017 and took office in February 2017. He is also the chairman of the boards of operating companies such as Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Power and TCS.

Continuity in leadership will give investors and stakeholders confidence in the 154 year old conglomerate that has been the salt maker for luxury sedans. The group is working on one of Chandra’s flagship projects – an all-in-one e-commerce super-app, to market its suite of consumer products and services as part of the digital transformation.

The group is also revamping its aviation business after the successful acquisition of Air India Limited from the central government last year.
