HYDERABAD: A pregnant Chenchu tribal woman, who had come for delivery at a government sector hospital in Achampet, Nagarkurnool, was turned back after doctors found her to be COVID-19 positive.
As her plea to accept her fell on deaf ears, the family of Nimalla Lalmma waited outside the gate of the hospital where the woman gave birth to a baby girl on Tuesday. Health Minister T Harish Rao took the incident seriously, following which the superintendent of the area hospital and a doctor were suspended on Wednesday.
Lalamma of Banala in Balamoor mandal had come to the hospital on Tuesday morning for the delivery of the third child. Doctors examined him. When they found that his Covid-19 test was positive, they referred him to the government hospital in Nagarkurnool. But, no ambulance was arranged to take him there.
Within 40 minutes, Lalamma started complaining of labor pain. Lalamma gave birth to the child in an open area near the gate of the hospital with the help of her siblings. When the hospital staff saw this, they took him inside and provided him a room.
Lalmma’s sister Alivelu complained that she felt neglected by the hospital staff, despite the fact that she was in severe pain.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Telangana Vaidya Vidhan Parishad has issued orders to suspend the superintendent of the hospital Dr Krishna and duty doctor Hari Babu.
“Clear instructions have been issued to all government hospitals not to deny admission to pregnant women, even if they are COVID-19 positive. This incident is gross negligence and violation of rules by the staff concerned,” the commissioner said.
The Superintendent of District Headquarters Hospital Nagarkurnool has been asked to conduct a detailed investigation and submit the report.
