Telangana medical student dies days after attempting suicide over “ragging”

D Preeti, 26, attempted suicide on Wednesday.

Hyderabad:

A first-year postgraduate medical student died in Hyderabad on Sunday night, four days after she allegedly attempted suicide.

Police said 26-year-old D Preeti attempted suicide on Wednesday after she was allegedly harassed by her senior at the Kakatiya Medical College. After working the night shift at MGM Hospital, she was found unconscious and taken to Hyderabad in a critical condition.

On her father’s complaint, Mohammad Ali Saif, a second-year post-graduate student, was arrested by the police on charges of ragging, abetment to suicide and harassment under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Warangal Police Commissioner AV Ranganath told NDTV that WhatsApp chats on the phones of the victim and the accused suggest ragging.

The student’s father Narendra said that he had complained against the senior student to the college and hospital authorities but no action was taken.

The victim’s family refused to allow the body to be taken from NIMS, Hyderabad for post-mortem and then to their native village for the last rites.

Several Lambada tribal associations also protested in front of NIMS in Hyderabad, Kakatiya Medical College in Warangal and MGM Hospital.

The National Human Rights Commission and the National Commission for Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes have taken cognizance and issued notices to the government, the superintendent, principal and head of the anesthesiology department of MGM Hospital, where Preeti was a student.

Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan had visited Preeti in the hospital. A compensation of Rs 10 lakh has been announced for the family.
