Recognizing the mental health crisis in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the urgent need to set up a digital mental health network that will address the challenges amplified by the pandemic, the Government of India announced the National Tele Mental Health Program (NTMHP) in the Union Budget. Of. 2022-23. Tele-MANAS aims to provide free tele-mental health services round the clock across the country, especially catering to people in remote or under-served areas.

The program comprises a network of 23 tele-mental health centers of excellence, with NIMHANS being the nodal center and the International Institute of Information Technology-Bangalore (IIITB) providing technology support. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bengaluru and National Health System Resource Center (NHRSC) will provide technical support.

The central government aims to open at least one tele-manas cell in each state/UT.

“A toll-free, 24×7 helpline number (14416) has been set up across the country, whereby callers can select the language of their choice to avail the services. The call will be forwarded to the Tele-Manas cell in the respective state and union territory,” a statement from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said.

“Tele-Manas will be conducted in two tier systems; Tier 1 comprises State Tele-Manas Cells consisting of trained counselors and mental health specialists. Tier 2 will consist of District Mental Health Program (DMHP)/Medical College Resource experts for physical counseling and/or e-Sanjeevani for audio-visual counselling. Special care is envisioned through the program by linking Tele-Manas with other services like National Tele-consultation Service, e-Sanjeevani, Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, Mental Health Professionals, Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centers and Emergency Psychiatric Facilities . NIMHANS has conducted training for 900 Tele Manas Counselors from most of the States/UTs.

The counseling institutes are AIIMS, Patna, AIIMS Raipur, CIP Ranchi, AIIMS Bhopal, AIIMS Kalyani, AIIMS Bhubaneswar, PGIMER, Chandigarh, Hospital for Mental Health, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Institutes. Psychiatry and Human Behavior Bambolim Goa, AIIMS, Nagpur, AIIMS, Jodhpur, KGMU Lucknow, AIIMS Rishikesh, IHBAS, Delhi, IGMS, Shimla, Psychiatric Hospital, Govt. MEDICAL COLLEGE, SRINAGAR, LGBRIMH, TEZPUR, NIMHANS, BENGALURU, IMHANS, KOZHIKODE, KERALA, IMH, CHENNAI, IMH, HYDERABAD, JIPMER and AIIMS, MANGALAGIRI.
