Video shows how bicycles can help ease urban traffic

Temjen Imna Along, a politician from Nagaland is known for his amazing sense of humor and funny captions on social media. He constantly keeps his fans and followers updated with important life advice, his personal life and the beauty of his kingdom. This time, Mr. Along shared a thought-provoking video, which emphasizes on adopting a minimalist and eco-friendly lifestyle. In the video, a man can be seen cycling on the streets with a cardboard hanging from his bag. The board reads: “Do you need a car/SUV to carry only one person during peak hours?”

Mr Along shared the video with a caption that read, “Believe it or not, the guy is right. (Believe it or not, the man is right)”

In India, it is common for people to be stuck for hours during rush hour, each of them riding in their individual car, which takes up a lot of space. However, this video explains how bicycles can help decongest urban traffic and reduce road congestion as they take up much less space than cars.

Internet users loved the idea behind the video and agreed with the cyclist’s message. One user wrote, ‘If the car is a symbol of class, status, success, achievement and luxury. (in the Indian social context for the current economic situation) then the bicycle (should) be a symbol of responsible and nature loving citizens. Governments should work on this.

Another commented, “This is very good and all local municipal bodies should encourage this by making good road plans. We need dedicated cycle tracks and pedestrian walkways in cities. Today cycling in traffic is very risky and hence many people are avoiding it.

A third said, “This is possible only when India has a better driving sense and bigger drivers start respecting smaller drivers.” Cycling is good, but are we making the roads safer for cyclists? There is no safe road for cyclists in any city. We cannot promote cycling without creating necessary infrastructure around it.

Mr. Along, the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Nagaland, recently emerged victorious from his constituency, Alongtki, defeating Janata Dal (United) candidate J Lanu Longchar. He was also the Minister of Higher and Technical Education in the Nagaland government, which will be reconstituted after the elections.
