Tension between CM-Governor of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray’s counter on the issue of women’s safety

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday responded to Bhagat Singh Koshyari after the governor wrote a letter demanding a special assembly session on women’s safety in the wake of recent rape cases in Mumbai. Thackeray said the governor should request the PM Narendra Modi And for a special four-day parliamentary session on the national issue, Home Minister Amit Shah said, “Delhi has been maligned as the rape capital of the world.”

“At a time when the opposition is demanding a special session on the issue, you (Koshyari) have supported their demand. It is a threat to the parliamentary democracy of the country,” Thackeray said in the four-page letter.

The governor had expressed concern over women’s safety in Maharashtra after the Sakinaka rape and murder incident. He had supported the demand for a special session of the Assembly on the issue.

Thackeray also wrote about the gang rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl in Delhi. “It happened in a city where the entire council of ministers sits,” he said. “The responsibility of maintaining law and order in Delhi rests with the Centre.”

Thackeray’s letter also mentions cases of crimes against women in BJP-ruled states including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Gujarat. “In Bihar, a ruling party MP raped a worker of his own party. There was pressure on the police not to register the case. An FIR can be registered only after three months of the court order,” the letter said.

Reminding the governor of the rising crimes against women in his home state of Uttarakhand, Thackeray said it was a matter of concern. “You yourself should compare swift police action in Maharashtra with inaction in BJP ruled states,” he wrote.

He said Maharashtra is the land of Chhatrapati Shivrai, who gave priority to women’s safety, “our government works on the same path”.
