The Tesla Model S Plaid Edition broke the lap record at the seminal Nürburgring Nordschleife track with a lap time of 7:30:909 minutes. Tesla is testing the Model S Plaid on a track that is considered by many to be the most challenging and dangerous racetrack in the world. Importantly, it breaks the record set by the Porsche Taycan by more than 12 seconds and comes close enough to gas-powered cars.

The Nürburgring Nordschleife was the stage of the life-changing accident of Nikki Lauda who is also featured in the film Rush. 3-time F1 world champion Sir Jackie Stewart has dubbed the track “The Green Hell”. It is one of the longest tracks with a single lap of approximately 21 kilometres, with the track winds at its peak inside the Rhineland forests and the roads having an assortment of waves and corners. This is a technical challenge for a car and smarts level driver.

The Tesla Model S Plaid clocked an average speed of 166.320 km/h, which Elon Musk shared on Twitter. Now, Musk has revealed that the Plaid will be modified with an aero kit, carbon brakes and track tires which is something that was also unofficially done on the Pikes Peak. This would represent a further improvement in lap time.

Technically, the Nio EP9 set a lap time of 6 minutes 45.90 seconds on the track in 2017. But since only 20 cars were made, this cannot be counted as a production car/Volkswagen’s ID. R which was an electric version of its LE. Mann’s car performed even better with a time of 6 minutes and 05.336 seconds, the fastest time ever on the track by an electric vehicle, but it is still not a production car.

Tesla believes it can achieve a timing of the Plaid in the range of 7 minutes 5-seconds. But it will come with new aero kit and of course, if Tesla dumps out the normal production car stuff then the car’s curb weight will be reduced making it faster.
