Tesla took inspiration from Apple and stopped including charging hardware in its cars

Tesla’s move may be reminiscent of what Apple did a few years ago, but in practice it’s worse

In addition to copying Apple’s vertically integrated model, Tesla has now copied one more thing from the world’s richest company. It has stopped including EV charging hardware with its cars, claiming it was not used often by its customers. Apple famously stopped providing the iPhone’s charging brick in 2020 with the launch of the iPhone 12, a move that has now been imitated by the likes of Samsung and Xiaomi in the name of climate change.

Tesla sold its cars with mobile charging cables for the longest time but then recently changed the policy. It now sells the Level Mobile Charging Cable for $75. After receiving a lot of backlash for the move, it took the price below $275.

When asked about the issue, Elon Musk said, “The usage figures were pretty low, so seemed useless. On the (minor) plus side, we’ll be including more plug adapters with the mobile connector kit.”

Tesla’s moves similar to Apple’s are pretty bad in practice because Apple’s users have hoarded chargers for years. Mobile phone charging standards are fairly standardized and the cost is quite low compared to the cost of getting a mobile charger for an EV.

0 notes

For example, Tesla sells its Level 2 charging kit for $400, which is roughly the price of the iPhone SE. Tesla used to include a NEMA 14-50 Level 2 connector and a connector for a regular Level 1 outlet. Then it dropped the NEMA 14-50 connector and only included a NEMA 5-15 adapter with a maximum output of 1.3 kW to enable trickle charge speeds. But now Tesla has removed the charging cable itself.
