Tesla won’t manufacture in India unless it is allowed to sell, service cars: Musk – Times of India

New Delhi – US electric car maker Tesla, which is seeking reduction in import duty to sell its vehicles in India, will not manufacture its products locally unless it has to first sell and sell its cars in the country. Service not allowed, company founder and CEO Elon musk Said. In a tweet replying to a user who asked about Tesla Setting up a manufacturing plant in India, he said, “Tesla will not set up a manufacturing plant in any place where we are not allowed to sell and service cars before.”
last month, Union Road Transport And Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari had said there is ‘no problem’ if Tesla is ready to manufacture its electric vehicles in India, but that the company should not import cars from China.
Musk said in August last year that if Tesla was the first to succeed with imported vehicles in the country, it could set up a manufacturing unit in India.
He said that Tesla wants to launch its vehicles in India “but the import duty is the highest of any major country in the world!”
Currently, India imposes a 100 per cent import duty on fully imported cars with a CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) value of more than US$ 40,000 and 60 per cent import duty on cars costing less than the amount. PTI RKL ABM ABM
