Tesla won’t manufacture in India unless it is allowed to sell, service cars: Musk – Times of India

New Delhi: American electric car maker TeslaThe company’s founder and chief executive Elon Musk has said it is seeking a reduction in import duties to sell its vehicles in India, unless it is allowed to first sell and service its cars in the country. Till then it will not manufacture its products locally.
In a tweet when asked by a user about setting up a manufacturing plant in India, he said, “Tesla will not set up a manufacturing plant at any place where we are not allowed to sell and service cars before.”

Last month, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari had said there is no problem if Tesla is ready to manufacture its electric vehicles in India, but the company should not import cars from China.
Musk said in August last year that if Tesla was the first to succeed with imported vehicles in the country, it could set up a manufacturing unit in India.
He said that Tesla wants to launch its vehicles in India “but the import duty is the highest of any major country in the world!”
Currently, India imposes a 100 percent import duty on fully imported cars with CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) over $40,000 and 60 percent on cars costing less than the amount.
