Textbook row: Congress student union members tried to create ruckus at the minister’s residence; 15 held

Some members of the student wing of Congress – NSUI (National Students Union of India) allegedly tried to stage a protest and surround the house of primary and secondary. education Minister BC Nagesh on Wednesday at Tiptur in Karnataka’s Tumakuru district over a school textbook dispute. The activists are said to have been protesting the Textbook Review Committee headed by Rohit Chakratirth and the inclusion of RSS philosophy in school textbooks. There has been a demand for the dismissal of Chakratirtha for allegedly saffronising school textbooks and altering the content in the books by including a text on the speech of RSS founder Keshav Baliram Hedgewar.

The textbook also accuses the 12th century social reformer Basavanna of wrong content, insulting the poet Kuvempu. “It is condemnable for NSUI workers to enter the premises of Education Minister BC Nagesh’s house and create a ruckus. This kind of conduct does not suit the students… merciless action will be taken against those involved in such acts,” Bommai tweeted.

State Home Minister Araga Gyanendra’s office said in a statement that miscreants alleged to be NSUI entered the premises of Nagesh’s house, raised slogans and set the RSS uniform on fire. The police prevented the situation from spiraling out of control and took 15 people into custody.

Tumakuru district in-charge Gyanendra also visited Nagesh’s residence and took stock of the situation. Condemning the incident, he said that a policeman was injured in the incident. “Strict action will be taken against those involved.” Police intervened and pushed the protesters outside the minister’s house, official sources said, adding that 15 people have been detained in connection with the incident.

As news of the alleged uproar by NSUI workers at Nagesh’s house spread, several of his cabinet colleagues, including Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, condemned the incident. Tumakuru district in-charge Gyanendra visited Nagesh’s residence and took stock of the situation.

He said a policeman was injured in the incident. “Strict action will be taken against those involved.” State BJP President Nalin Kumar Kateel and Union Minister Prahlad Joshi, State Health Minister K Sudhakar, PWD Minister CC Patil and Power Minister Sunil Kumar also condemned the students’ union members. Meanwhile, Bommai said Nagesh would submit a report on textbook revision on June 2 in the wake of the controversy.

Some saints and litterateurs have written letters to Bommai demanding action on the dispute.
