Textile manufacturing units in Perambalur provide livelihood to marginalized women

About 270 underprivileged women have been given employment in two manufacturing units of the recently opened Karur-based textile companies at Veppur Panchayat Union in Perambalur district.

Some of the Karur-based textile companies, A-Tex Home Collection which makes bags, and Stellar Fashion Inc., which produces undergarments, in April launched their manufacturing units in four villages, Olapadi, Nannai Murukkanagudi and Keezapuliyur, as part of the Tamil Nadu Rural Livelihood Movement. installed. , The disused buildings were renovated and equipped with all facilities including sanitation and electricity connection to set up the units.

A total of 300 people were benefitted in several villages, of which 90% were women. District Collector P. Sri Venkada Priya said, “It has created employment and helped in empowering around 270 marginalized women.”

The main objective of setting up the units was to provide a life of respect, security and recognition to the marginalized women.

Since there were no factories or large production units around, women who have skills are restricted due to lack of employment opportunities and were left with no option but to accept low-paying jobs. “Although women have basic education qualifications, they are unable to travel to other cities for work because of their family background,” said Ms. Priya.

“Women are left to look after the family on their own as their husbands work in other cities. Because the elderly and children are dependent on them, they are bound to choose bureaucratic jobs. The worry is who will take care of the family if they go to work. To deal with this, they were given jobs closer to their homes,” she said.

The major beneficiaries are women from marginalized sections as many of them have to struggle to make ends meet. “I know how to sew, but I never took up a job. After getting a job in a manufacturing unit with a respectable income, I can meet my family’s daily expenses and a significant amount,” said Karthika, a resident of Keezhapuliyur. I can save.
