Thane: Police foiled a robbery attempt in a village in Thane district. Maharashtra and arrested five armed men in this connection, an official said on Friday.
He said the property cell of Thane Police’s crime branch took action on Thursday morning.
“Acting on a tip-off that some people were planning to carry out an armed robbery at Khardi village on Diva-Shil road, the police laid a trap at around 6 am on Thursday. Soon after, they arrested about eight persons. Saw him going there in a suspicious manner,” said Ashok Honrao, senior inspection of the property cell.
The police team acted swiftly on them and nabbed them. However, three of them fled the spot, he said.
“After apprehending the five accused, the police recovered a ‘katta’ (country-made gun), two bullets, a nylon rope, chilli powder, chopper and other material from them, he said, adding that they were identified as Sanjeev. Brother (32), Harum Mahto (25), Shekhar Kasbe (29), Ajmal Khan (18) and Arshad Aslam Shaikh (40).
During interrogation, the accused revealed that they had stolen diesel from some trucks and containers parked on the road between Dombivali and Manpada in the district. After that, the police recovered the stolen diesel and the two vehicles used in carrying it, which together cost Rs 6,53,550, Honrao said.
An offense was registered against the accused under sections 399 (preparing for dacoity), 402 (assembling for dacoity) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC at Sheel-Daighar police station. A case has also been registered against them under the Arms Act and the Bombay Police Act, the official said.
