Thanks, Elon Musk Says Ukrainians on Getting Internet, Phone Services Amid War

A photo of Ukrainians using mobile phones and contacting their families amid the war with Russia has taken the internet by storm. A photo shared by a Ukrainian journalist shows how billionaire and SpaceX founder Elon Musk’s Starlink broadband services helped local residents access the Internet in remote villages.

Journalist Kristina Burdynskikh posted a photo of Ivankiv, Ukraine, in which people can be seen checking their mobile phones. The journalist wrote in a tweet, “In Ivankiv, the city of the Kyiv region, which was recently liberated from the Russian army, still lacks electricity, internet and mobile communications. Thanks to Starlink and Elon MuskPeople contact their families for the first time in #Ukraine”.

The photo was also shared by Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, along with thanking Elon Musk for the ‘priceless’ service. He tweeted, “Ivankiev village of Kyiv region just after the capture of ru. Power and mobile communications have not yet been restored, but starlink came on time The locals are finally able to tell the relatives that they are alive. Thanks, @elonmusk, your help is invaluable to UA”.

Elon Musk’s Starlink terminals help a user connect to the Internet via the company’s group of satellites without the need for a cable connection.

According to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), SpaceX donated 3,667 terminals and Internet service itself, while USAID purchased the remaining 1,333 terminals.

Musk, 50, born in South Africa, has offered his support for Kyiv. Last month he tweeted, “Hold strong Ukraine” this month while offering “my sympathies to the great people of Russia who don’t want this” war.

He also responded to Kyiv’s plea by activating Starlink internet service in Ukraine and sending equipment to help bring connectivity to areas affected by Russian military attacks.

SpaceX activated its Starlink service in Ukraine on February 26, days after a government minister tweeted at Musk urging him to provide Internet access.
