Tharoor supporters: 2 former Union ministers, 3 MPs, G23 leader among 60 signatories

Former Union ministers Mohsina Kidwai, Saifuddin Soz, three MPs and G23 leader Sandeep Dikshit are among those who signed the nomination forms in support of Shashi Tharoor’s candidature for the post of Congress president. Tharoor posted six forms on Twitter, though he could submit only five on Friday as he was delayed by a few minutes in submitting the sixth form.

Also, it is not known whether all five of his forms were accepted or not, as Congress’s Central Election Authority chief Madhusudan Mistry said on Saturday that out of the total 20 nomination forms, four were rejected. While one rejected form belonged to former Jharkhand minister KN Tripathi, Mistry refused to divulge who had filed the other three forms which were rejected.

Party leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Tharoor are now in the fray. Kharge submitted 14, Tharoor five and Tripathi one form.

According to the six forms posted by Tharoor on Twitter, which had the signatures of 60 PCC representatives (10 each on the six forms), 10 representatives from Jammu and Kashmir and 10 representatives from Nagaland supported Tharoor. Prominent leaders who supported Tharoor included former Union ministers Soz, Kidwai, three MPs Karti Chidambaram, Pradyut Bordoloi and Mohammad Javed and Sandeep Dikshit.

Dixit and Tharoor were among a group of 23 leaders who wrote to Congress President Sonia Gandhi in 2020 demanding massive organizational reforms. Interestingly, most of the G23 leaders have extended their support to Kharge by becoming his proponent instead of supporting Tharoor.

Attaching a screenshot of the six forms of support, Tharoor tweeted, “I present my 60 candidates. 12 states, all levels of leadership but all proud @INCIndia workers. “I thank him and the thousands of workers he represents for believing in me. Thank you, my parliamentary colleagues, for the unwavering support of the year,” he tweeted with the hashtag ‘Think Tharoor Think Tomorrow’. Tharoor said, “Thank you for your support for my candidature, colleagues from far and wide.”

According to the notification issued by the party on Thursday, the process of filing nominations for the elections was from September 24 to September 30. If needed, the polling will be held on October 17. Counting of votes will take place on October 19. And the result will be declared on the same day. More than 9,000 PCC representatives will vote in the vote.
