The fungus wreaking havoc in Zombie Apocalypse: The Last of Us is real

The Last of Us web series is a post-apocalyptic drama revolving around a marauding fungus that starts a wave of infection. Such zombie-based dramas are now becoming increasingly popular, sparking curiosity among audiences who contemplate the possibilities of such infections occurring in the real world.

After covid-19 pandemicSuch concerns have gotten some extra air, and news or other content around such topics is gaining even more traction.

But, especially when it comes to fungus in The Last of Us web series, it doesn’t have the potential to wreak havoc in real life. The fungus featured in the series is a form of Cordyceps and the most toxic forms of this fungus can inhabit their hosts and eat them alive. The fungus then serves to link the brain with the body and use it to move around and infect others.

For now, this whole zombie thing only occurs in certain species of ants, in the form of Cordyceps. Even not all ants are affected by the fungus, so there is little chance that the phenomenon could escape the world of insects.

According to health experts, Climate change Can make fungal infections more widespread in humans. We breathe in a lot of fungi during respiration because we have fungal spores in our bodies, but the human body has evolved to fight off fungal infections.

Aspergillus, Histoplasma, Blastomyces, and Coccidioides are some of the fungal species that can infect humans. But, these can only cause minor problems with our immune system and are usually treated by anti-fungals.

Experts say that some ‘shrooms’ may have mind-altering effects on the human brain, but these are generally mild and temporary and cannot be compared to those of the Ophiocordyceps unilateralis ant.

Excessive use of antibiotics should be avoided as they can wipe out the good bacteria from the human body and make it more vulnerable to fungal infections.
