New Delhi: A senior consumer affairs ministry official said on Tuesday that the government is exploring adopting a common charger for various devices, including smartphones and tablets, and has called a meeting on August 17 to discuss the issue with the industry.

A meeting with mobile manufacturers and sector-specific organizations has been scheduled to assess the possibility of eliminating the use of multiple chargers in India and curbing e-waste apart from reducing the burden on consumers, the official said. he said.

Recently, the European Union announced the adoption of a USB-C port common charging standard for small electronic devices by 2024. There is a similar demand in America as well.

“If companies can offer service in Europe and the US, why can’t they in India? Portable electronic devices like smartphones and tablets should have a common charger,” the official said.

If India does not insist on this change, such products may be dumped here, the official said. Currently, the incompatibility of the ports of existing chargers forces consumers to buy a different charger every time they buy a new device.
