DUBAI: An Indian doctor who helped get Pakistani cricketer Mohammad Rizwan Coming back on his feet a day ahead of the World Cup semi-final in Dubai, the wicketkeeper praised the batsman’s indomitable spirit and courage as he battled a severe chest infection in an ICU bed.
Sahir Sanalbadin, a specialist pulmonologist at Medor Hospital, who treated the cricketer, was surprised by Rizwan’s quick recovery.
“I want to play. To be with the team that, (I want to play and be with the team),” Rizwan used to tell the doctors treating him in the ICU.
The Pakistan opener overcame all odds and scored 67 runs in 52 balls as his team lost to Australia by five wickets in the knockout game.
Sahir recalled, “Rizwan had a strong desire to play for his country in important knockout matches. He was strong, determined and confident. I was amazed at the pace at which I recovered.”
Rizwan was suffering from intermittent fever, persistent cough and chest tightness for 3-5 days before being admitted to the hospital.
The medical team immediately immobilized him and gave him symptomatic drugs to ease his pain. “His pain was 10/10 at the time of admission. Hence, we subjected him for a detailed evaluation to diagnose the condition,” said Sahir.
The results confirmed that the player had a severe laryngeal infection that led to esophageal spasm and bronchospasm. This is a painful contraction of the muscles within the esophagus. “Esophageal spasms can feel like sudden and severe chest pain that lasts from a few minutes to hours,” Sahir said.
The medical team shifted the 29-year-old cricketer to the ICU and closely monitored his condition. Rizwan had to manage severe pain and other issues induced by the medical condition.
“Rizwan had a serious infection. Achieving recovery and fitness before the semi-finals seemed unrealistic. It usually takes 5-7 days for anyone to recover,” said Sahir.
However, the cricketer was confident and showed tremendous willpower. “He seemed very focused and believed in God. His only thought was about the semi-finals,” said the doctor.
For two nights in the ICU, Rizwan responded well to symptomatic medications and showed significant improvement. The doctor believes that various factors may have contributed to his speedy recovery.
“Rizwan was determined, courageous and confident. His level of physical fitness and stamina as a player was instrumental in his recovery. He was in ICU for 35 hours.
After being evaluated by a multidisciplinary team of doctors, Rizwan was discharged from the hospital around Wednesday afternoon.
The team officials were constantly in touch with the medical team. “During sporting events, we have seen players coming in with injuries. But this is the first time a player with a serious infection of this scale has recovered so quickly.
“When Rizwan hit big sixes, we were all ecstatic. The strength he has gained after illness is amazing. His dedication, commitment and courage is really commendable,” Sahir said.
A grateful Rizwan thanked the doctor and the medical team for their support and care. He also presented a signed jersey to Sahir as a token of gratitude.
