Judge Rajesh Chakraborty of the special CBI court in Asansol received a letter stating that if Mr. Mandal was not granted bail, his family members would be falsely implicated in the NDPS Act.

“You are requested to… release the bail of Anubrata Mandal immediately. Otherwise, your family will face commercial volume in case of NDPS (Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances). This is for your information,” the letter said.

The sender of the letter has identified himself as Bappa Chatterjee, Principal Clerk, Executive Magistrate Court, Purba Bardhaman. Mr Chatterjee, however, denied sending the letter and said that his signature was forged. “It’s not my signature. This is a fake letter. I have told my superiors,” he said.

The judge forwarded the letter to the Registrar General of the Calcutta High Court. The development comes a day before Mr Mandal is likely to be produced before the Asansol court.

Mr Modal was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with cross border cattle smuggling scam on 11 August.
