Bhubaneswar:

The number of wives in the list of a 66-year-old man from Odisha who married middle-aged, educated and affluent women from different states has gone up to 17 with three more cases being reported. the official said on Wednesday.

It was earlier alleged that the man who is currently in judicial custody had performed 14 marriages.

The accused, who had contacted the women under the false identity of a doctor, had also married a chartered accountant from Chhattisgarh, a doctor from Assam and a highly educated woman from Odisha, the police official said.

“Three more wives of the fake doctor have been identified,” Bhubaneshwar Deputy Commissioner of Police US Dash told reporters in Bhubaneswar.

A student from Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district also alleged that a fake doctor cheated him of Rs 18 lakh by assuring him of a seat in a medical college in the state.

“Their mobile phones will be sent to the forensic lab and their financial transactions will be examined,” Mr Dash said.

Help has also been sought from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) after three PAN cards and 11 ATM cards were found with the accused.

According to the police, he duped their wives of lakhs of rupees before proceeding, of whom four lived in Odisha, three in Delhi, three in Assam, two each in Madhya Pradesh and Punjab and one each in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh. Huh. Greener pastures.

Ramesh Chandra Swain, who has different names like Dr. Bibhu Prakash Swain and Dr. Ramani Ranjan Swain, hails from a coastal village in Kendrapara district of Odisha.

Swain was adept at persuading women and wooing college teachers, even hardened policemen and captive lawyers, as he kills middle-aged women desperate for cooperation with Cupid’s Arrow.

However, his luck ran out after 38 years on Valentine’s Day on Monday, when he was arrested by the police from Delhi based on the allegation of his latest wife, whom he married in 2020.

Swain married for the first time in 1982 and last in 2020. His last marriage to a teacher took place at an Arya Samaj temple in Delhi.

However, he denied the allegations. When taken to court, Swain said, “I haven’t married all these women and I’m really a doctor.”

Swain befriends women on matrimonial websites and cleverly hides his marital status.

He allegedly cheated his wife with a promise of Rs 10 lakh from Punjab and Rs 11 lakh from the gurudwara, where she was married, to facilitate the establishment of a medical college. Police said he was arrested twice earlier in Hyderabad in 2010 for unemployed youth and loan fraud and in 2006 in Ernakulam.
