In other words, opposition unity is something like “united we stand, divided we stand”.

At a Thursday meeting, opposition parties agreed that with the government showing no signs of agreeing to a discussion on the Adani issue, it was best to seize the opportunity. So the plan was to allow the motion of thanks to the President’s address and put forth his views and seek clarification on the Adani controversy. Derek O’Brien’s cryptic tweet suggested that anyone who deviated from this strategy would be seen as joining hands with the BJP.

On Monday, it was back for protests as the opposition parties led by the Congress did not think it appropriate to allow the motion of thanks. The Trinamool Congress did not participate in the meeting, but was on the side of other opposition parties during the protest over the Gandhi statue.

Sources say the Congress is divided as usual with many senior leaders thinking that using the motion of thanks to corner the government is a good idea. but the party is a unit and then there’s Rahul Gandhi Factor. The Adani issue has been Rahul’s favorite subject and the controversy has helped him and his party say, “I told you so.”

In a private moment after giving a clean chit to his father Rajiv Gandhi in the Bofors case, Rahul had said that it was his father’s pain and humiliation that he would not forget in a hurry. Many people in the Congress feel that Rahul Gandhi is trying to take revenge by constantly attacking the government and the Prime Minister on the Adani issue.

Also, after the Bharat Jodo tour, Rahul’s challenge is to ensure that he can continue the momentum and traction.

But, it is now likely that the motion of thanks will be moved again by Tuesday. Sources say that most of the opposition parties do not want the Congress to walk away with the credit and limelight. The unity displayed inside Parliament has rarely been replicated outside, where the Congress is the main rival to regional satraps who want to think big.

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), Trinamool Congress (TMC), and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), to name a few, are all vying for space with the Congress. And as long as the ingredients of the opposition recipes fight among themselves, the BJP need not worry about the main dish.
