The rupee edged higher by 18 paise at 74.70 against the US dollar

On the domestic equity market front, the BSE Sensex ended 143.20 points or 0.24% lower.

The rupee on Friday closed 18 paise higher at 74.70 (provisional) against the US dollar in view of weakness in the US currency in the overseas market.

In the interbank forex market, the local unit strengthened against the greenback at 74.71 and witnessed intra-day high of 74.68 and low of 74.77. It finally closed at 74.70, which is 18 paise higher than its previous closing price.

In the previous session, the rupee had closed at 74.88 against the greenback.

The rupee has strengthened by 37 paise against the US currency during the week.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which measures the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.09% to 95.29.

However, gains in the rupee were limited amid a rise in crude oil prices and a softening in domestic equity markets.

On the domestic equity market front, the BSE Sensex ended 143.20 points or 0.24% lower at 58,644.82, while the broader NSE Nifty slipped 43.90 points, or 0.25%, to 17,516.30.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures were trading 1.44% higher at $92.42 per barrel.

Foreign institutional investors were net sellers in the capital markets on Thursday as they sold shares worth Rs 1,597.54 crore, according to stock exchange data.
