The second phase of mandatory hallmarking will be effective from June 1

The Center on Saturday said that the second phase of mandatory hallmarking under the Hallmarking of Gold Jewelery and Gold Artifacts (Amendment) Order, 2022 will come into effect from June 01, 2022.

According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, the second phase of mandatory hallmarking will include three carats such as 20, 23 and 24 carats in addition to gold jewellery/artifacts mentioned in Indian Standard IS 1417 and 32 new. Districts under Compulsory Hallmarking Regime where an AHC has been set up after the implementation of the first phase of the Mandatory Hallmarking Order.

Earlier on April 4, the government had notified the order.

Notably, BIS has successfully implemented hallmarking mandated by Bureau of Indian Standards in 256 districts of the country with effect from 23 June 2021, with over 3 lakh gold items being hallmarked with HUID every day.

The Ministry highlights that BIS has made a provision to allow a general consumer to get his/her unhallmarked gold jewelery tested for purity at any of the BIS-accredited Assaying and Hallmarking Centers (AHCs).

In addition, the AHC will test Sleep Prioritize jewelery from general consumers and provide a test report to the consumer.

“The test report issued to the consumer will assure the consumer about the purity of his jewelery and will also be useful if the consumer wants to sell the jewelery lying with him,” the ministry said.

However, a fee will be charged for testing gold jewelery up to 4 items 200. The fee will be 45 per article on 5 or more articles.

The authenticity and purity of hallmarked gold jewelery having HUID number purchased by the consumer can also be verified by using ‘Verify HUID’ in BIS CARE app, which can be downloaded from Play Store.
