The all-women police, Chitlapakkam, arrested a suspended special sub-inspector (SSI) for raping and cheating a 37-year-old woman who claimed to be the winner of a state-level beauty pageant.
Police said the complainant had won a beauty pageant a few years back. She was doing social work on East Coast Road and lived in Susheela Nagar, Kovilambakkam. He was recently cheated by a builder who promised to build a house on his land. Special Sub-Inspector Andrew Caldwell is introduced at a tree planting event and offers to help after hearing of her plight.
The woman was mired in grief after the death of her aged parents abroad due to illness. They consoled her saying that evil spirits had cast a spell on the house. He imprisoned him for 40 days on the pretext of offering a special prayer. He gave her drink laced with intoxicants and assaulted her. When he informed the family about this, they pacified him.
The woman complained that Caldwell usurped her properties and valuables. He alleged that the man could have cheated others as well. When she met him, he attacked her. The complainant alleged that he threatened to post her morphed pictures online.
In 2022, after the police registered the case, he went into hiding. A special police team arrested the accused in Kolkata. He has been brought to the city and sent to judicial custody.
