Agra: Uttar Pradesh The government has ordered an inquiry into the land given on lease. Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in 1929 by the late Jat king Mahendra Pratap Singh for 90 years, after a local resident filed a complaint claiming that despite the expiry of the lease period, the land was not returned by the university.
Commissioner (Aligarh Division) Gaurav Dayal told TOI that he had received a letter from Additional Chief Secretary SP Goyal. “I have sought a report from the District Magistrate (DM),” he said.
Notably, the late Jat Raja, a freedom fighter and social reformer who donated land to various educational institutions, was an alumnus of the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College, which later became AMU. He leased 3.04 acres of land to the university in 1929 to build a school.
Ashok Choudhary, president of the Ahuti organization, in his complaint filed with the UP CM, claimed that the land which was given to the university through the Court of Ward on August 14, 1929, should be handed over to the state, which owns, As per the UP Zamindari Abolition and Land Reforms Act, 1952.
He further said that the land should be used for the construction of a state university in the name of the late king as a tribute.
Choudhary told TOI on Thursday, “Since there was an agreement between the state government and Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh in 1960 that except the land being used by him and his family members for personal use, other lands belong to the state government. will be owned.” , stating that as per section 2(1)c of the Zamindari Act, the State has the right to take possession of the land which is “being misused or in illegal possession”.
Incidentally, the late Raja’s great-grandson Charat Pratap Singh had in 2018 given a legal notice to the university about the termination of the lease.
He had said, ‘My great-grandfather had given two lands to AMU to promote education. We are donating huge land for the construction of City School of AMU to keep the legacy behind and in return the institute will name the school after Raja.
Another small piece of land of 1.221 hectares was also released from the lease. Therefore, Raja’s family members had demanded that the AMU officials should either vacate the land or buy it at the market price.
AMU’s executive council had in September last year constituted a committee to look into the matter.
When contacted, AMU spokesperson Professor Shafi Kidwai said though the executive council was ready with Singh’s proposal, a final decision is yet to be taken. “The matter is under process and a decision will be sent to the ministry for its approval.”
Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of a university named after Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh. at least 396 degree colleges in Aligarh The division is to be affiliated with this upcoming university.
