Pune: The civic body has decided to decentralize the supervision of hospitals and sonography centers to increase surveillance at such health facilities. Recently, this step has been taken after a fake doctor was detected in the city.
Municipal officials said that the work will be divided at the ward level. He said medical officers of the ward would be trained to inspect facilities, including Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) centres, to ensure that they have renewed their licenses or have proper registration.
Doctor Kalpana BaliwantiAssistant Health Officer, c (PMC), said, “We will train ward medical officers to inspect sonography centers for checking their documents under the Pre-conception and Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques Act (PCPNDT) Act and other rules. Inspection to ward medical officers Sonography Center and IVF To inspect facilities once in three months and maternity homes and clinics twice a year. Though the Central PCPNDT committee would be present, the decentralization process would help in overseeing the centers on a regular basis.”
Baliwant said that as per the amendment to the PCPNDT Act in February 2022, all surrogacy centers and artificial fertility clinics should be registered under the PCPNDT Act and monitored as per the latest guidelines. “We also expect an increase in sperm banks in the city because under the revised rules, we can now allow more sperm banks in the city. As of now, there is only one sperm bank in the city.”
However, activists were cautious about this move. Kiran MogheThe woman activist and member of the PCPNDT committee said, “The decision may help in increasing surveillance, but the ward medical officers are already burdened with the existing work. Hence, it is doubtful whether they will be able to do the monitoring in time or not. PMC should recruit staff in Central PCPNDT cell.”
