Stockholm-based Candela, a world leader in hydrofoil electric boats that fly above the surface of the water to consume less energy, has demonstrated a new boat that is based on an electric power train. The Candela P-8 Voyager is designed to replace conventional water taxis and commercial passenger water trains that rely on combustion engines. The boat that has been unveiled in Venice is based on the same foundation upon which the C8 electric speedboat is.

The P8 relies on a hydrofoil system used by the brand on other electric boats. It has been designed by over 50 engineers who have experience in the drone, aerospace and software industries. The onboard flight controller changes the foil angle of attack when the boat reaches a speed of 16 knots and allows it to lift and fly above the surface of the waves.

“You really get the seakeeping capability of a 100-foot by 28-foot ship. Failing in bad weather would be nature’s ultimate experience. Taking in dramatic scenery, breaking waves and flying perfect all safely. Silence.” This is a new level of luxury that, dare I say, has never been experienced at sea,” said Eric Eklund, head of commercial at Candela.

The flight controller for the boat relies on a wide range of sensors to gauge wave height and ensure a smooth ride even in adverse conditions. The system can handle four- to five-foot-long chops and boat wakes, thanks to its high ride height and quick adjustments of roll, pitch and altitude that occur 100 times per second.

The system is also used for areas that are boat-sensitive, such as Venice. Hydrofoil systems have almost zero wakes and hydrofoils are no bigger than Venice’s famous gondolas.

The Te P8 Voyager is designed to be very light on maintenance. The Candela C-Pod motor has been developed specifically for the company’s hydrofoiling watercraft. It has a pair of submerged motors that deliver 50 kW of power and drive a counter-rotating propeller directly, without the need for any transmission.

This means no oil, no noise and no cooling liquid which means no maintenance. It can also run for 3,000 hours without service, which is 30 times longer than any internal combustion-based system.

It’s also a fully connected bot and supports OTA updates to enable Candela’s 24/7 service department to perform remote troubleshooting.

“For commercial operators to go electric, we knew the service aspect was important. No matter if you run a whale-watching business or if you are the captain of a superyacht – we aim for the maintenance on this boat. There’s zero downtime,” Eklund said.

The P8 Voyager cruises at 20 knots and has a top speed of 30 knots, which means it is faster than internal combustion. The boat is 28 feet long and offers room for up to 6 passengers.
