Who doesn’t love a little magic trick or optical illusion once in a while? Considering the sheer talent that goes into the design of great optical illusions, it should come as no surprise that there are competitions to judge the most mind-boggling of these creations. A significant case is the 2021 Best Illusion of the Year contest, which each year lists and selects the most creative and ingenious illusions from around the world, reaching a large audience. This year, the award for Best Illusion went to “The Phantom Queen”, produced by Matt Pritchard of the United Kingdom.
According to ‘Best Illusion of the Year ContestThe website is a celebration of phenomenon illusion and perception, “created by the ingenuity of the world’s leading illusion creators”. The site further states that “visual scientists, ophthalmologists, neurologists and artists make up the illusion community”.
A video of the confusion has been shared with details on the contest’s YouTube page. The winning composition consists of a chessboard and its reflection in the mirror. “However, there is a phantom white queen piece that appears only as a reflection, leaving a mysterious empty square in the foreground,” the note reads.
Elaborating further, the description states, “The illusion is achieved by creating a camouflage invisibility cloak that shields the queen from one viewing angle. The shape and pattern of this shield when viewed from another angle as coming from the mirror’s reflection.” It also hides its presence.
He is not everything. The clip also shows several other ways in which “anamorphic camouflage” can be used to create a remarkable magical appearance and an invisible cube.

Second on the list is “The Changing Room Illusion” by Michael A. Cohen of America. The illusion is based on the concept of “graduate change blindness”. This is achieved by a video that shows still footage of a living room. But when you look closely it seems that objects have been removed from the room or even added to it.
Dawai Bai and Brent Strickland took third place for “The Double Ring Illusion”.
is an initiative by competition Neural Correlated Society (NCS), a non-profit organization that aims to promote scientific research “into the neurobiological relationships of perception and cognition”. According to the website, the organization “serves a community of perception scientists, ophthalmologists, neurologists, and artists who use a variety of methods to help them discover the basis of deceptive perception.”
Prizes for first, second and third place are chosen by online voters.
