think it through

Come 2027 and a large part of India could go the way of Delhi, diesel vehicles will be taken off the roads. The Energy Transition Advisory Committee constituted by the Center has also suggested the same. If its recommendation is accepted, we could see diesel cars off the roads in cities with more than one million people. It is not only the metropolitan cities of India, but also many other urban centers. There is no doubt that this could fuel our transition away from fossil fuels, and given the climate crisis, there may even be an urgent need to phase out dirty fuels.

But any such major change should always be well planned. Auto-makers have spent huge amounts to make products compatible with BS6 emission norms, and an abrupt end to diesel product lines could render most of that wasted. Users may also be banned long before the vehicles are out of date, even if an impending ban drives away resale buyers in our big cities. In addition, the commercial vehicle sector may also be affected, threatening shortages in public transport systems if green alternatives are not filled in time. Clearly, the impact of such a ban must be carefully considered. and widely debated.
