VCK chief accuses police department of slowness in investigating such cases

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi President and Chidambaram MP Thole. Thirumavalavan on Tuesday pointed to a rise in cases of violence against Dalits in 2021, according to data published by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) and alleged that the previous AIADMK government and its administrators supported violence against Dalits.

He urged Chief Minister MK Stalin to take cognizance of the lax attitude of the police department in investigating cases of atrocities against Dalits and take appropriate steps.

In a statement, Mr. Thirumavalavan said 1,144 cases were registered in 2019, 1,274 atrocities cases were registered in 2020 and 1,377 cases were registered in 2021. “In 2021, 53 Dalits were killed and attempts were made on the lives of 61 Dalits. In 2020, Tamil Nadu was ranked fifth in terms of atrocities on Dalits. Now, Tamil Nadu is at the seventh position,” he said.

Mr. Thirumavalavan also said that Tamil Nadu also ranks high on the list when it comes to violence and discrimination against Dalit women. “As per the NCRB report in the state in 2020, 123 Dalit women were raped. In that, 88 persons were below 18 years of age. Tamil Nadu ranked fifth in the list when it comes to violence against female Dalit children and according to statistics, 89 girls were raped in 2021.

Mr. Thirumalavan alleged that Tamil Nadu was sluggish when it came to investigating cases of violence and discrimination against Dalits.

“In 2020 694 cases were not investigated, and in 2021 825 were not properly investigated. In 40% of the registered cases, the charge sheet has not been filed as per the report. The reason for increasing atrocities on Dalits is the attitude of the police department. The Chief Minister should take cognizance of this issue and take appropriate steps to end the atrocities on Dalits.
