This Instagram page will plant a tree for every pet photo you share

An account on Instagram known as Plant a Tree Company has admitted that they were behind the anonymous plantation post. The organization posted a carousel on the platform, taking responsibility for the viral sensation. The post started out as an ‘add yours’ sticker that quickly spread around Instagram Stories after quickly gaining popularity. The viral sticker pledged, “We will plant 1 tree for every pet picture” followed by a dog emoji. More than 4 million of the photo-sharing platform’s users responded by sharing images of their beloved pets. The Planting Effort campaign also roped in actresses like Sarah Hyland and Lili Reinhart.

Soon, people posting pictures of their pets began to question, “Where are the 4 million trees?” The organization later claimed that the said post was removed after only 10 minutes as they realized that they would not be able to honor the commitment to plant trees. According to the post, it was started as a fun campaign to raise awareness of environmental issues. But he soon realized that it could prove to be too popular and decided to step down. He claimed that it was an honest mistake and things soon spiraled out of control. After the original post was deleted, people were able to continue sharing, even if only the credit was removed from the sticker. The sticker was not completely removed from the site.

To gain recent attention, the organization set up a fundraiser. He wrote, “We are only raising money through this Instagram fundraiser which will go directly to them so they can use it to plant trees. We never touch any money.”

Meanwhile, Instagram has clearly distanced itself from the company and its campaign. Responding to the viral campaign, Manch indicated that they would work on a way to bring transparency in such situations.

A spokesperson for Meta, the owner of Instagram and Facebook, said in an email to CTVNews.ca, “‘Plant 1 tree for every pet photo’ ‘Add yours’ thread disabled to limit misunderstandings about the author of the original post.” It was done. We are working on it. Ways to clarify authorship and reduce confusion going forward.”

Plant a Tree Company sent Instagram head Adam Mosseri a direct message asking if the platform would plant trees for them.
