Elon Musk is the richest man in the world. But the billionaire is also a lot of other things: he’s the CEO of Tesla, the owner of SpaceX and The Boring Company, a cryptocurrency enthusiast, a meme-maker, a covid, and a Twitter troll. The billionaire has often received criticism for his radical (and sometimes rash) worldview. Musk also appears to have two personalities: a cool Zuddy personality online, and a Boomer Grandpa persona offline. Online, Musk talks about taking humanity to the moon. Offline, Musk wants his employees to work longer hours at Tesla.
Musk recently announced that he is looking at introducing policy changes to his companies to help employees have more than one child. He added that the Musk Foundation also plans to “donate directly to families.” Currently, the exact details of childcare benefits are unclear. Musk says details will be announced next month.
Will the benefit include months of paid leave for both parents to take care of the children? Tesla’s track record of mistreating (and suing) employees is unlikely to be known.
But between his pseudo-philosophical tweets and Twitter (on Twitter) criticism, along with some of his statements on public record, we’ve figured out what Musk’s ideal employee would look like.
In early June, Musk announced that employees would be required to spend at least 40 hours in the office per week. “To be clear,” he said, “it may not be “some remote pseudo-office,” but rather where his actual associates are located. “If you do not come,” he demanded, “we will assume that you have resigned.”
In mid-June, private rocket company SpaceX called on executives at the startup to draft and circulate an open letter criticizing founder Elon Musk and making the company’s work culture more inclusive. The employees were fired.
In late June, a Tesla investor filed suit against CEO Elon Musk on Thursday, claiming the company had failed to respond to complaints of harassment and discrimination. The suit alleges that Tesla “created a toxic workplace based on racist and sexist abuse and discrimination” against its employees in a lawsuit filed in federal court in the Western District of Texas.
Musk may be a genius, but he may not be the boss you want. Perhaps Beyoncé’s latest song, ‘Break My Soul’ is instead the current great resignation anthem.
