This time in Germany Google Maps faces new antitrust investigation

Germany’s competition regulator on Tuesday launched proceedings against Google and its parent company Alphabet to investigate possible anti-competitive behavior by Google Maps against rival map service providers.

The investigation against Google Maps has been launched by the Federal Cartel Office (FCO) under strict abuse laws that have been in place for Google’s business in Germany since January this year.

“We have information to suggest that Google may restrict the combination of its own map services with third-party map services, for example when Google Maps location data, search functions or Google Street View are shared by Google.” When it comes to embedding in the maps not provided, FCO President Andreas Mundt said in a statement.

“We will now investigate whether this practice could allow Google to further expand its position of power with respect to certain map services,” Mund said.

Under the new tough laws, the authority can bar companies most important to competition from engaging in anti-competitive practices.

“We will also look at the licensing terms and conditions for the use of Google Maps services in vehicles. We are also pursuing or have already terminated further proceedings against Google and other large digital companies such as Apple, Amazon and Meta/Facebook. are,” informed the FCO.

The Google Maps platform provides access to several map services. Applications for these services include embedding maps into third-party websites, for example, to show the locations of shops or hotels.

The initial assessment by the FCO is that Google specifically restricts the possibility of combining Google’s map services with third-party maps. “This practice may reduce competition in the field of map services. The fact is that Google uses its services under the in-vehicle infotainment system, which is subject to the very strict terms of use applicable to ‘Google Automotive Services’ could further restrict competition,’ the German watchdog said.
