Tight security at counting centers in Tamil Nadu

Director General of Police C. Silendra Babu on Monday said that all arrangements have been made to ensure peaceful counting of votes in the urban local body elections to be held on Tuesday.

He said a three-tier security arrangement has been made at all the counting centers with deployment of personnel from Taluk Police Stations, Armed Reserve and Tamil Nadu Special Police.

Counting of votes will take place on Tuesday at 279 centers across the state at 11 centers in Greater Chennai Police Border, four centers in Avadi Police Commissionerate, five centers in Tambaram Police Commissionerate and 259 centers in 37 other districts.

“Rapid Response Teams and Rapid Action Force will be deployed at convenient places near the counting centres. As many as 11,797 CCTV cameras have been installed at the counting centres. Through these cameras, the officials are constantly monitoring the activities happening in the counting centers. In addition, vehicles equipped with surveillance cameras are being deployed near the centres. Drones will be deployed wherever necessary,” the DGP said.

109 Superintendents of Police (SPs) or Additional SPs, 417 DSPs, 1,239 Inspectors, 4,671 Sub-Inspectors/Special Sub-Inspectors, 18,744 Other Police Personnel from Taluk Stations, 5,805 Armed Reserve Police Personnel, 3,143 from Tamil Nadu Special Police and 6,782 Personnel from Home Guards In all, 40,910 personnel will be deployed for the settlement.

The DGP said over 60,000 policemen would be deployed after the counting of votes to prevent any untoward incident. People coming to the counting centers will be allowed only after verification of identity cards and scanning with metal detectors. Specially trained male and female police personnel have been deployed here.

The DGP said that police commissioners and SPs have been asked to intensify patrolling from morning to prevent any untoward incident.
