Tipra Motha activist killed after miscreants attack in poll-bound Tripura, 5 arrested

An alleged political murder was reported from Surma assembly constituency on Thursday, six hours after the assembly elections in Tripura were announced. A worker of Tipra Motha Dal was attacked by unidentified people when he was on his way home after completing his work. His party has accused the BJP of carrying out the attack.

Police have arrested five people in connection with the murder of 44-year-old Pranjit Namshudra. They were identified as Nitya Shuklabaidya, Shrikrishna Mallik, Gopal Namshudra, Rasmohan Das, Nishikant Dev. Two accused identified as Raju Dev and Kajal Namashudra are absconding in this case

According to the police, Pranjit Tipra was the leader of the Soorma Kendra of Motha Dal. Police said the miscreants first vandalized his car and then fatally attacked him on the head.

Police said Pranajeet was with his friend when the incident took place late on Wednesday night. Additional Superintendent of Police Binoy Kishore Debbarma said that the miscreants stopped his vehicle, dragged him out and assaulted him. PTI,

The ASP said that on receiving information, a police team reached the spot and took Pranajeet to Kamalpur Hospital, where the doctors referred him to Kulai District Hospital. “On being taken to the Kulai health facility, Pranajit was declared brought dead at around 11.30 pm,” he added.

Pradyot Kishor Manikya Debbarma, head of the regional organisation, appealed for peace on Twitter. “Please don’t react or anything. I am personally verifying what has happened! The last thing we need is violence for elections,” he tweeted.

He later paid tribute to Pranjeet on Twitter, calling him a “warrior”. Pradyot Kishor said that his “sacrifice will not go in vain” and questioned Election Commission on its claims of “zero violence”.

The incident took place a day after a Congress rally was attacked in Majlishpur assembly constituency of West Tripura district. Ten party members, including AICC general secretary Ajay Kumar, were injured in the attack.

Elections to the 60-member Tripura Assembly will be held on February 16. The counting of votes will take place on March 2.
